It literally means a weblike bread, but mostly translated to English as lace pancake or 'net' bread. It is a Malay tradional cuisine, mainly in the northern part of Sumatra island and also in West Malaysia and Singapore.

To make the pancake, you can use a common pancake recipe, but you must use a special cup to pour the pancake dough into a hot non-sticky fry pan. This roti jala cup has 4-5 small holes and you have to move a regular circular way to make the lacy pattern. After the pancake is cooked, you can fold it into a rectangular shape like in the left figure.

This is one of the top dish from Bu Sui. Zo lekker!! We had to asked our parent to send the roti jala cup specially from Medan, Indonesia in order to make it here in Holland. So what does this cup look like? See this demonstration below, where Bu Sui poured the pancake dough with the roti jala cup into a frying pan.

The best way to serve roti jala is with a spicy chicken or beef curry. The hotter is the curry, the better is its taste.

Roti jala is one of favourite dishes in Malaysia. It can be found in many food stalls on the streets. I found a nice picture from the internet about people selling roti jala on the streets.
